Emma’s Birthday
Adventure Challenge
This adventure challenge is designed to bring your birthday squad closer together and get you to explore the surrounding area while having fun and staying safe. Please follow all local and state laws and be respectful of anyone or any business you interact with along the way.
Here Are The Rules
Read each challenge carefully and click on any provided links to view helpful pictures, videos, and requirements for each challenge.
Complete as many challenges as you can in the given time frame. Challenges can be completed in any order. Challenges are often designed to bring you together through fun, difficult, or embarrassing experiences, so complete whatever challenges you and your group are comfortable with. Just be sure to create some unforgettable moments and content that your group will cherish forever!
Some challenges may require a few basic supplies to complete them. Figuring out how to obtain these supplies somewhere in the area is part of the strategy so work together and use what you’ve got to get what you need.
Team members need to stay together throughout the adventure, however, if you are all at the same location and searching for an item you can spread out until it is found and then regroup to take the necessary picture/video.
Capture as many team members in your picture or video as possible. When out in the community, teams often ask a kind stranger to take their picture or video so that the entire team can get on film. If it's necessary to have someone on your own team film certain challenges be sure to rotate who that person is so that everyone is actively involved in completing challenges throughout the adventure.
#1: To honor Emma’s passion for swimming, confirm what her favorite stroke is, and then get every team member a large (16 ounces or so) open-top paper, plastic, or foam cup and fill it with water. Then somewhere outdoors, line up shoulder to shoulder and balance a full cup on each team member’s head. Once everyone’s cups are balanced, take a video of your team working together to all take 10 steps while doing Emma’s favorite stroke. If she chooses the backstroke you’ll need to take 10 steps backward while performing the stroke the entire way and keeping the cup balanced. Complete the 10 steps without anyone touching their cup or having it spill. If someone’s cup spills make sure to encourage them and then refill any spilled cups and start again as a team. After your team successfully “swims” 10 steps together dump the cups to prove they were full, and celebrate!
#2: Take a video of your team successfully completing the Whipped Cream Catapult Challenge (click the link at the end of the description to see it performed properly). Divide your team into pairs. Have someone squirt a dollop (small lump) of whipped cream onto the back of their hand. Have the other person stand a few feet away from them ready to catch the whipped cream in their mouth. The person with the whipped cream on their hand will swing their arm back, palm down. When that hand gets back in front of them at about waist height, they’ll strike their wrist with their other free hand, causing the whipped cream to go flying. The second person should successfully catch the whipped cream in their mouth, or at least catch some of it in their mouth and the rest on their face. To complete this challenge at least half your team should make a successful catch in the video. To understand the challenge better and to watch a video of a team successfully completing it click HERE.
#3: All of your lives are intertwined because of your friendships with Emma. Located somewhere here in downtown, get your team to the “Tabachin Ribbon”, which shows the beauty of being intertwined together. Once there, form a group with an even number of participants and at least 6 total people (you can recruit kind strangers if needed). Then take a video of your group completing the “Human Knot Challenge” while the Tabachin Ribbon is in the background. To watch a video about how to complete the Human Knot Challenge click HERE. To improve your chances of success, don’t grab the hands of either person right next to you and make sure you have the hands of two different people.
#4: Emma has been on this Earth for 5,111 days and throughout that time you all have likely used Scotch Tape for just about everything. Well, except this. To honor this incredibly versatile American-made product take a fun team picture after everyone uses Scotch tape to dramatically stretch and distort their faces. For some inspiration click HERE.
#5: Get your team to the YMCA here in downtown. Along the way create a short dance routine incorporating moves from the 2014 Just Dance video game that featured the song “YMCA”. To see the entire routine click HERE. Then once you’re there, take a video of your team performing the routine while the YMCA logo is visible in the background.
#6: Take a video of your team members all at the same time consuming separate spoonfuls of any brand of hot sauce. Make sure to show the bottle or packet of hot sauce in the video so it can be confirmed that it's actually hot sauce you're consuming.
#7: Over the course of 14 years Emma has already proven she’s a talented performance artist, but nobody gets to that point without a supportive squad behind them (like all of you). This challenge will help you continue to “get behind” some other iconic artists, literally. Get your team to Union Station here in town (310 Main Street) and take a fun picture creating “SleeveFace” illusions with any album sleeves that are conducive for creating this effect. To learn what a SleeveFace illusion is and to see some examples click HERE.
#8: Take a picture of your team forming a 3-tiered, human pyramid inside of any elevator. You’ll need at least 6 people to properly form 3 tiers, so recruit kind strangers if needed or feel free to use more than 6 people if you have enough willing participants on your team. The elevator can be stopped at a floor with the door open as long as your pyramid is performed inside the actual elevator.
#9: The month of September has been deemed by many as Firefighters Appreciation Month — a month to honor, pay respect to, and celebrate these extraordinary men and women. To raise awareness and support firefighters, their families, and the communities they protect, take a video of your team completing "Stop, Drop, and Roll" while any regulation/operable fire extinguisher is visible in the background, or you are standing in front of an actual fire station. Be sure to yell each step of the fire safety technique as you all do it together and make sure the fire extinguisher or fire station is clearly visible at some point in your video.
#10: To accomplish anything great, whether that’s putting on a memorable performance on stage, scoring the winning goal on the soccer field, or becoming the president (21 years from now) requires great leadership and the drive to accomplish your dreams. Anywhere around the area find any life-size statue of a human and take a memorable team picture posing exactly like the statue, to show that you will someday deserve to have a statue built in your honor as well. Then after this event, live each day in a way that will make people want to build a statue of you in the future.
#11: To honor Emma’s 14 amazing years on this planet, anywhere around the area take a team picture with any parked vehicle that has a license plate which contains numerical digits that add up to 14, no more, no less. So if the plate were "CF6H 5K3" it would be acceptable because those numbers add up to 14 and there aren't any additional numbers.
#12: Find any two strangers around the area wearing cowboy hats or cowboy boots. You could also find one wearing a hat and one wearing boots but both strangers would need to be wearing one of the required items. Once you’ve found them, take a video of your team all singing the first line of the classic 1941 song "Deep in the Heart of Texas", and then have the two strangers respond accordingly (with clapping and singing)! To see an example of this song being sung successfully click HERE. Sing it loud and proud and encourage your Texas loving strangers to do the same.
#13: Get to any clothing or apparel store and find two different items with enough in stock that every team member can be wearing the same two items in their own sizes. Then take a fun team picture with everyone wearing those items. For example it may be a wacky shirt, and a pair of shorts. Or maybe some cozy slippers and a large sun hat. As long as everyone is wearing the same exact two items but in their own sizes.
#14: Being a part of a youth group helps you understand how important it is to love and serve others. To show love to some of our most under appreciated neighbors, anywhere around the area find an active military person or a veteran. Then take a video of them watching your entire team doing 14 push-ups or sit-ups at their feet to honor their strength and courage. After you’ve finished recording, spend a few minutes learning more about their time in the service before you depart, as a small gesture of appreciation.
