Here Are The Rules
The challenges have been divided into two categories; ones that can be completed anywhere, and ones that can be completed in Port Jefferson. Complete as many challenges as possible, in any order, up until 4:30pm. Each challenge is worth 100 points, other than a few challenges labeled with a higher value. Team members need to stay together throughout the experience, although challenges designed for an individual can be completed and submitted separately.

ANYWHERE CHALLENGES
#1: Create a “connection chain” using every member of your team. Click HERE to see an example of how to create one, and then take a video once everyone is lined up and explain how you are connected to the person next to you. Work hard to discover creative and meaningful connections with one another, not just something generic such as “we each breath air”. This challenge is worth 250 points.
#2: Take a team picture with any boat name that would be considered an “alliteration” (two consecutive words that start with the same letter). For example, it could be a boat named “Speedy Salmon” but not a boat named “Speedy Trout”.
#3: Take a video of your team members all at the same time consuming separate spoonfuls of any brand of hot sauce (the hotter the better). Make sure to show the bottle or packet of hot sauce in the video so it can be verified that it's actually hot sauce. Disclaimer, this will likely not be pleasant, which is exactly the point. Because a team that suffers together, grows together.
#4: Take a video of at least half of your team members completing the Group Sit & Stand Challenge. Basically, your team members will all be standing shoulder to shoulder in a tight clump/circle with your backs all facing in and your arms interlocked. Slowly lower the entire interlocked group to the ground until you are in a seated position with your butts on the ground, and then slowly stand all the way back up while remaining interlocked the entire time. To watch a video of a group successfully completing this challenge click HERE.
#5: Find a stranger (someone not from SDV) who is an active military person or a veteran. They could be wearing some form of military or veteran attire, have a military ID, or they could simply describe their military background while you’re completing your challenge. Then take a video of them watching your entire team doing 10 push-ups, sit-ups, or jumping jacks to honor their strength and courage. After you’ve finished recording, spend a few minutes learning more about their time in the service as a small gesture of appreciation.
#6: Take a team picture with any parked vehicle that has a license plate which contains numerical digits that add up to Taylor Swift’s lucky number, no more, no less. So if Taylor’s lucky number were 18 (it’s not) and the plate were "CF7H 5K6" it would be acceptable because those numbers add up to 18 and there aren't any additional numbers. This will be a good method for uncovering who on your team are true Swifties!
#7: Click HERE to get to the brain puzzles and then select “Memory”. Then have at least two team members achieve a score of 50 or more points. Once you have your two super focused teammates, take a celebratory picture of them while they’re displaying their phone screens and the point totals are clearly visible. If needed, you may need to submit an additional close-up picture of the two devices to clearly show the point totals.
#8: At the core of SDV is a community of people who provide unique solutions to unique client needs. This can only be achieved by listening to the people you provide services for and understanding the stories that make them who they are. Take a video of your team and any stranger that has a tattoo while they explain what that tattoo means to them or why they got it. The tattoo must be visible at some point during the video.
#9: Find any group of youth (two or more people under the age of 18) and take a video of them teaching your team members how to “Floss”. And no, it has nothing to do with your teeth.
#10: Take a video of your team completing "Stop, Drop, and Roll" while any regulation/operable fire extinguisher is visible in the background. Be sure to yell each step of the fire safety technique as you all do it together.
PORT JEFFERSON CHALLENGES
#11: Get your team to the Bayles Boat Shop, which is helping to keep Port Jefferson’s boat building heritage alive through community supported restoration and boat building projects. Once on site, find a staff member who will give your group a quick intro about their current project, a replica whaleboat from the Revolutionary War era. Then, take a picture or video of your team as the staff guides you through the Oar Sanding Challenge. To make sure each team gets a truly immersive experience with the boat builders please click HERE to see a recommended time when your team should arrive for this challenge. This challenge is worth 250 points.
#12: Research has shown that one of the best ways to manage stress so it doesn’t harm your mental health is to exercise, practice deep breathing, and hang out with friends. To do all of these things at once, get your team to Harborfront Park and find Nino (a local yoga instructor who will have a yellow mat) to complete a short mindfulness routine while overlooking the water. Once finished, have someone take a picture of your team while you all strike your favorite yoga poses. This challenge is worth 250 points.
#13: Get your team to the mural shown HERE. Once you’ve found it, have someone take a well timed picture of your team all jumping in the air at the same time with your arms outstretched while the mural is behind you, to represent how your group can “soar” if you’re all focused on the same goal.
#14: Get your team to any accessible beach area and using drift wood, seaweed, rocks or other debris spell out the letters "SDV" as large as possible and take a fun team picture with your creation. You may want to build it in a somewhat discreet area or destroy it after taking your picture so that another team can’t come along and use it.
#15: Located somewhere around the village is the same type of object that was featured on the cover of the second studio album by British-Irish boy band One Direction. Once you figure it out, find the one located around this area and take a fun team picture with it while everyone on your team is stuffed inside or posing like it’s a photo for your own boy band album cover.
#16: Find the boat seen HERE and pack your entire team in or on the vessel and then take a memorable picture while everyone is acting as if you’re caught in a “Perfect Storm” scenario.
#17: Find a postcard that features this area in some way, or a fun greeting card, and purchase it. Then click HERE to go to the Love For Our Elders project, which is focused on fighting loneliness with love, one letter at a time. As a team, choose someone from their list whose story or background resonates with you. Then on your card include a fun or uplifting message and sign it. Take a picture with the card’s message to show you've completed your Act Of Kindness and then at some point along the way or after your event ends stamp it and drop it in the mail.
#18: Get to any clothing or apparel store and find two different items with enough in stock that every team member can be wearing the same two items in their own sizes. Then take a fun team picture with everyone wearing those items. For example it may be a wacky shirt, and a pair of shorts. Or maybe some cozy slippers and a large sun hat. As long as everyone is wearing the same exact two items but in their own sizes.
#19: Anywhere around the area, find an establishment that has an animal in it's name and take a fun team picture with everyone posing or acting like that specific animal while the establishment’s signage is clearly visible in the background. Please note you’re looking for a place with the animal in it’s actual name such as "The Friendly Giraffe" and not a place that lists an animal as something that is served there such as "Hattie B's Hot Chicken".
#20: Port Jefferson was a hotbed of spy activity during the Revolutionary War. Patriots used whale boats to ferry secret messages in invisible ink from the British stronghold of New York City to Washington's forces on the other side of the Sound. To honor the spy ring that was based here and the impact it had on the America we have today, find the business with the logo seen HERE. Once there, divide your team into two groups and have each group compete in their own Rock, Paper, Scissors “spy battle”. Basically, in each group, have everyone throw their chosen symbol at the same time. If rock, paper, and scissors are all thrown, it is a stalemate, and you all rethrow. If only two symbols are thrown, all players with the losing symbol are eliminated. Play continues until only one winner remains in each group. Then have the winners from each group compete against each other in one final battle while the rest of their group cheers for their finalist. Once a champion has been declared take a fun picture with the entire team and the logo in the background while the champion is flashing their winning symbol and everyone else is looking defeated.
